At this moment its winter time in the Netherlands and last couple of weeks it was freezing almost degrees Celsius during nights. I had a few people ask me to jump start their cars in the morning, but always said NO because I believed that it was no good to jump start their 12V vehicles from one of the two batteries in my cruiser.
This because I learned that the batteries need to be balanced and that even a 12V radio connected to one battery might cause damage. Can anyone tell me if I did right by refusing to jump start I feel kinda bad, because I really liked to help these poor people If it is possible, please tell me the right procedure to prevent frying their or my batteries. Just a citizen trying to do good.
Joined Dec 29, Messages 9, Location Abby. You did the right thing. The only way you should be jump starting a12V with a 24V is by giving them a good push only if the dead vehicle is a standard transmission.
The correct procedure if you want how to help baby sleep longer at night help out the 12V people is to have a 3rd 12V battery on its own charging system and jump start them from that. Now, if you batteries are dead, you may be able to get a jump start from a 12V by using the 12V battery to deliver a charge to your high side battery.
You have to connect them battery post to battery post. Do not use the engine or frame as a ground. Just seemed to be something I read somewhere Wouldn't it work to just hook up to both batteries, but in parallel instead of series?
I assume the downfall being that you'd need to put together a set of custom jumper cables, or crudely hook together two or three sets on-site, which would be a much higher risk of frying all their electronics with 24V. It made sense to me that if my truck is going to sit for a few weeks at a time rather then disconnect the batteries, I'll just have a plug out front like my block heater to plug it in and make the batteries happy Seems to be working great!

While most car electrical systems are 12 volt, many diesel engines, larger trucks and buses, and most military vehicles use 24 volts to deliver the extra power necessary for diesel glow plugs. Some volt systems use volt batteries, while others wire two volt batteries in series. In either case, if a vehicle with a volt battery needs a jump start, it can be a headache. Since the power of a volt system will overload a volt one in another vehicle, you will need another volt battery to provide the power.
Find someone with a volt system in their car or truck to come help you. Their electrical system can safely be connected to yours with jumper cables without risking an overload as your vehicle starts. Move the second vehicle's hood as close as possible to yours, and pop both hoods open. Look under both hoods to locate the batteries. They are large, rectangular plastic boxes with two large electrical contacts on them. If the cars have two batteries, they will be wired in sequence, so it doesn't matter which terminal you attach it to; the good battery will power up the whole circuit.
Clip one end of the black negative cable to the negative "-" contact of the good car's battery and the other end to an unpainted and ideally shiny piece of metal on the frame of the dead car. Exposed bolts in the engine compartment work well. Don't clip it to the dead battery itself, as this risks a battery explosion. You may see a spark when you make the final connection; this is normal.
Put the key into the good car's ignition, and start it. Step on the gas with the car in neutral to rev the engine, and provide extra power to the alternator; this will keep electricity flowing into the battery as it charges the dead battery in the other car. Shut down the good car's engine, and try to start the dead car. This avoids the risk of damage to the first car's electrical systems from the surge in the circuit as the first car starts up, but might not always work.
If it doesn't, try starting the dead car with the good car's engine running. Check for problems if the dead car still doesn't start. If, after wiping the terminals and turning everything off, the car still doesn't start, then it is likely a problem with your starter or alternator, and you will need a tow.
Buy a volt battery pack from an automotive store, and plug it in to charge it. Turn the battery pack on and try to start your vehicle.
